The use of Broad Axes

The Broad Axe, or the Hewing Axe, is used to shape (hew) logs and timbers of all kinds in the old traditional way, particularly when building log-houses.

Broad Axe patterns have varied enormously from region to region and over time. The bit of the Broad Axe is beveled on one or two sides and the direction of the handle may be straight or angled sideways to protect your knuckles.
