Assessing The Tree
Good
felling work aims at bringing the tree down as near to the intended place
as possible, without damaging either the tree, the saw or - the logger!
There are many natural forces difficult to assess. A tree may weigh tons.
The wind is a fickle factor to deal with and can often create difficulties
by using the crown as a sail.
The inclination and crookedness of the tree and the shape and degree of
overhang of the crown make the centre of gravity and natural direction
of fall of the tree difficult to assess. /NBFS/Assess
the best way to fell the tree before the cut is started. The felling direction
will be influenced by a variety of factors. Study the lean and the crown
form from different angles. Assess if there is any rot in the tree. Snags,
dead limbs, the lean of tree to be cut, wind conditions, locations of
the trees, and other hazards shall be appraised and proper precautions
exercised before the cut is started. /OSHA/
